Opening a coffee shop in a container attracts more and more entrepreneurs who are looking for a quick, well-organized and easy-to-adapt solution. However, the structure you choose directly influences the way you will work daily, the comfort of your customers and the long-term operating costs. If you size the space incorrectly or choose an inappropriate level of insulation, limitations arise that can slow down your development. To make the right decision, follow the steps below and clearly establish which type of structure suits your coffee shop concept.
Clearly define the concept and the required size
It starts with a simple question: are you selling coffee "to go" or creating a space where customers spend time?
For serving at the window, a container cafe 6,00 x 2,40 m or 6,00 x 3,00 m generally covers the basic needs. You integrate the professional espresso machine, grinder, refrigerator, sink and a small storage space. The barista works efficiently, and the investment remains controlled.
If you want indoor tables, things change. You need 6,00 x 4,80 m or 6,00 x 6,00 m, obtained by joining several modules. In this configuration you can include a bathroom, technical area and storage space, so as to comply with the sanitary and fire safety regulations in Romania. Think about the project from the perspective of expansion. Many entrepreneurs start with one module and later add others, without modifying the initial structure.
Choose between monoblock and modular container
After you have determined the size, the next step is to choose the type of structure. You can more easily compare the differences between the variants in the material about monoblock vs modular containers, especially if your project depends on available space, interior organization, partitioning, or the possibility of later expansion.
The monoblock container works very well for compact concepts. For quick deployments in parking lots, office building courtyards or confined commercial areas, this variant remains a practical choice.
The modular structure gives you freedom of configuration. You can separate the preparation area from the serving area or create a small, distinct technical space. Each module maintains the continuity of insulation and installations, and the joint allows the integration of electrical and sanitary systems without interruption. For projects that grow over time, this solution offers more flexibility.
Choose the type of insulation
For a café container, the insulation must be chosen according to the location, the operating season and the type of activity. The basic structure starts from a solid frame, made of galvanized sheet, cold-formed, primed and painted against corrosion. On this frame, the walls are mounted from PIR foam sandwich panels, and the ceiling and floor include mineral wool. The configuration is established at the design stage, so that the space can support the preparation of products, serving customers and the activity of the team.
The standard insulation includes 40 mm thick PIR foam sandwich panel walls, along with mineral wool in the ceiling and floor. This variant is suitable for café containers located in moderate temperature areas or for projects with seasonal activity. It can support coffee-to-go concepts, compact commercial points, serving spaces in retail parks or locations where customer flow is concentrated at certain intervals.
Premium insulation is recommended for café containers used all year round or located in areas with large temperature differences. This includes walls made of 60, 80 or 100 mm thick PIR foam sandwich panels, as well as double-layer mineral wool in the ceiling and floor. The premium version supports a more stable interior environment in cold periods, very hot summers or in windy locations, especially when the container includes a preparation area, serving area and customer space.
Plan the installations
The coffee container comes from the factory with a complete electrical installation, configured according to the requirements established in the design stage. Before production, you determine the position of the sockets, the need for electrical equipment, the work area and the main consumers. This stage helps to organize the space correctly.
You can also opt for factory-fitted sanitary installations, depending on the café concept and site requirements. If you need a sink, boiler room, toilet or water supply points, the details must be established during the bidding stage. After receiving the container, the connection to the utilities is your responsibility and must be planned in relation to the container's position on the site.
After the container is delivered, you can purchase and install the equipment necessary for your business. This category may include professional espresso machines, grinders, refrigerators, product display cases, furniture, cash registers, shelves, or preparation equipment. Their choice should be made based on the workflow, the proposed menu, and the number of employees who will work simultaneously.
Organize the interior for efficient flow
The interior of a coffee container should be designed around the natural order flow: taking, preparing, paying and serving. The work area should allow for short movements between the espresso machine, grinder, refrigerator, sink and counter. When each piece of equipment has a well-established place, staff can work faster, without blockages between the preparation area and the serving area.
For a compact space, the position of the countertop, shelves and storage areas is very important. Frequently used products should be placed close to the preparation area, and stocks can be kept in lower cabinets or dedicated spaces. As with other types of commercial containers, the internal organization must be established before production, so that each element supports the activity and does not overload the available surface.
If you choose a container with a customer area, separate the staff route from the customer access route. The serving area should remain easily identifiable, and tables should be positioned without blocking the activity behind the counter. For concepts with window service, the priority remains fast flow, with a simple line between ordering, preparation and handing over of products.
Analyze the budget and project stages
The final cost depends on the size, the thickness of the PIR foam sandwich panel walls and the equipment. Before making a decision, it is recommended to compare the available options and determine what the basic configuration includes, what is added during the design phase and what equipment you will purchase and install after receiving the container. For an overview of the investment, see the indicative list of container prices.
Include in the budget the transportation and assembly of the container, according to the agreed configuration. Connections to utilities and any external arrangements are made after the container is received; these are your responsibility and must be taken into account separately in the financial planning. This may include connections to water, sewage and electricity.
If you are preparing a complex project or the location is in an area with strict regulations, talk to an architect or design engineer. Compliance with urban planning, sanitary and ISU regulations remains the responsibility of the beneficiary, and careful planning shortens the authorization time.

FAQs
What needs to be prepared before assembling the coffee shop container?
Before assembly, the access for transport, the location area and the space required for unloading must be checked. The container is mounted on concrete slabs or pillars, at least 10 cm from the ground, according to the established configuration. The location must be free of materials or objects that may block the positioning of the container.
Can the exterior of a coffee container be customized?
Yes, the exterior of a coffee container can be adapted to the image of the business. During the design stage, you can discuss colors, exterior cladding, the position of the serving window and the visual elements necessary to identify the commercial point. The choice is made depending on the concept, location and the image you want to convey.
Can a coffee container be relocated after a period of operation?
Yes, a coffee container can be relocated to another location if the commercial project changes or if you want to test a new area. This option helps to use the same space in different projects.
